Nov 15, 2007 Orcs & Elves is a clear attempt to recreate the feeling of old fantasy RPGs released in the '80s and '90s, such as Dungeon Master and Eye of the Beholder. Every element of it is faithful to the tradition of pen-and-paper RPGs: there are Vorpal swords, wererats, invisibility potions, dwarvish forges and talking wands. The orc can deal some damage, but there's a piece of meat nearby. Take note of the blue rune lock on your left, but leave it for later. Talk to Nestri who is a few.
At the Game Developers Conference in San Jose last March, EA Mobile's Mitch Lasky opined that a mobile World of Warcraft would set wireless gaming on fire. Turns out that, rather than wait for any other developers or publishers to realize his vision, Lasky and EA mobile were busy courting the talents of id's John Carmack to do just that.EA Mobile announced today that on May 9, Verizon subscribers could download, a five-hour fantasy RPG exclusively for mobile.
( & Elves will roll out on other carriers in July.) The game is not set in any existing fantasy universe, but an entirely new creation under development by id and Fountainhead Entertainment, using a next-gen version of the graphic engine that powered last year's hit, DOOM RPG. Orcs & Elves combines both traditional turn-based combat with first-person exploration. Under the tutelage of a chatty magic wand, gamers delve deep into a fortress that is overflowing with 35 different kinds of enemies, including zombies, dark elves, and trolls.
Weapons like flaming swords and cross bows help keep these monsters at bay. Treasure and useful artifacts can be collected to help overcome obstacles. 'We are thrilled to be working again with the brilliant team at id Software and Fountainhead Entertainment to create Orcs & Elves exclusively for mobile,' said Lasky, Senior Vice President of EA Mobile. 'We are committed to delivering the most innovative wireless titles and this collaboration with id Software is testament to that dedication.' 'The formative computer games of my youth were fantasy games, so I am happy to finally bring one to market,' said John Carmack, founder and technical director, id Software.
'Orcs & Elves has been explicitly designed to play to the strengths and avoid the weaknesses of the mobile platform, with easy game play, a tight design, and a rewarding presentation of a world we think players will want to see more of.' 'Creating a rich world for the mobile market where players can immerse themselves at any time or any place is truly rewarding,' said Katherine Kang, CEO, Fountainhead Entertainment. 'It's exciting to see games evolving on this platform.' IGN Wireless will have more information on Orcs & Elves in the very near future.
